Residential Waste Collection Information
Rules for placement of trash:
- Pickup time
- Trash must be placed at the curb or alley line by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.
- Your trash hauler collects trash between 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
- To report a missed collection, call the Mayor's Action Center.
- Proper containers
- Trash must be in proper containers to be collected. Proper containers include unbroken plastic bags, trash cans, or 90-gallon carts.
- Trash cans must be no smaller than 5-gallons and no larger than 32-gallons in size.
- Plastic bags should be closed and have adequate room left above the closure to lift the bag. Cans should have handles and lids.
- If a cart is used, all trash inside must be in closed plastic bags.
- The following may not be used as containers: 55-gallon barrels, corrugated containers, cardboard boxes and torn plastic bags.
- Cart and trash limit
- A maximum of ten containers including bags and cans, may be set out for collection each week.
- Two heavy trash items may be set out each month.
- One cart counts as three containers.
- Note: One heavy trash item counts as one container. Therefore, if you put out two heavy trash items, you may on set out eight containers of trash.
Acceptable Heavy Items
Acceptable waste description: Acceptable waste is trash which is characteristic of regular residential waste including: food waste, paper, bottles, metal cans, plastics, cloth, toys, and leaves or grass. Tires without rims are acceptable waste. Each tire without a rim will count as one container.
- Bundling of shrubbery cuttings and carpeting
- Shrubbery cuttings, small limbs and sticks, and carpet pieces must be tied in bundles no larger than 3' x 3'. Each bundle is counted as one item or container.
- Breakdown, bundling of boxes
- All corrugated containers and cardboard boxes must be flattened, emptied and tied in bundles. Each bundle of this type is counted as one item or container.
- Heavy trash
- Heavy trash includes household furnishings, disassembled bicycles, disassembled swingsets, tires with rims, and appliances, except those containing freon. Call (317) 327-4622 for instructions on handling freon appliances.
Unacceptable Items:
- Demolition, construction, or discarded building materials such as drywall, roofing, brick, wood, etc.
- Trees, large limbs, or stumps.
- Brush and vegetation resulting from building contractors, commercial tree trimmers, or lawn services.
- Sod, fill dirt, and trash from contractor clearings, and other materials requiring special handling.
- Explosives, pathological and biological waste, radioactive material, ashes and sand.
- Automotive parts, such as engines, rear ends, springs, fenders, seats, etc.
- Farm equipment, marine vessels, and any major parts thereof.
- Septic, human and animal waste.
- Diapers and cat litter are accepetable only in minimal amounts.
- Loose trash that is frozen to the ground or container.
Rules for Leaf Removal:
- Leaf removal runs from November 9-December 4.
- Leaf bags must be separate from trash bags. We recommend placing trash on one side of your driveway and leaves on the other.
- You do not have to call in advance for pickup.
- Leaves will be picked up on your normal trash day.
- You are allowed up to 40 total bags per week.
- For example, a homeowner might have 2 bags of trash which would allow them to place 38 bags of leaves that week. If a customer has 10 bags of trash they would be allowed 30 bags of leaves that week.
- If you have more than 40 bags in a week, they will be left behind for pickup the next week.
